The EDCON DC70720R is a starter lead—acid battery designed for use as the main source of electrical energy in passenger cars with an on-board power supply of 12 V. The model belongs to the European design range and is made in the L3 standard size, which determines its compatibility with a large number of modern vehicles of European, Korean and Japanese manufacturers.

Standard size L3 and its prevalence

The L3 case with dimensions of 278 × 175 × 190 mm is one of the most sought—after European form factors in the starter battery market. Its popularity is explained by the fact that this size is incorporated into the engine compartments of a large number of mid-range models, which require both moderate compactness and sufficient energy reserves. Car manufacturers, focusing on the European DIN and EN standards, initially design parking areas for such dimensions, which simplifies the unification of spare parts and reduces the cost of maintenance.

The L3 size is found in sedans, hatchbacks, mid-range station wagons, compact and mid-size crossovers, as well as in minivans. This makes batteries of this format the de facto standard for a significant proportion of the fleet of passenger cars operated in Europe and neighboring regions.

Compatibility conditions

The EDCON DC70720R can only be used on a specific vehicle if several conditions are met at the same time. Each of them has a technical justification and cannot be ignored in favor of partial compliance.

A 12 V onboard network is a basic condition that excludes the installation of a battery on commercial vehicles and special equipment with a 24 V onboard network.

The seat under the body is 278 × 175 × 190 mm — deviations in dimensions are unacceptable, as they can lead to the inability to fix, contact with the elements of the body or hood, and impaired ventilation.

Right polarity (R+) — the terminal arrangement must correspond to the standard wiring diagram of the power cables; otherwise, the cable length will be insufficient or there will be a risk of short circuit.

The lower mount type B13 — ensures correct fixation on the standard site without the use of bearings.

The standard capacity is about 70 Ah, which corresponds to the estimated electrical load of the car.

The required starting current of the order of 720 A ensures a safe start of the internal combustion engine at subzero temperatures.

Failure to comply with at least one point leads to the need to select another battery.

Application by car class

  1. Sedans, hatchbacks, and C- and D-class station wagons. This is the main battery application segment. This includes vehicles with gasoline engines of 1.4–2.5 liters, as well as diesel modifications that require increased starting current. In these machines, the load on the on-board network is distributed between classic consumers and electronic comfort systems, which is in good agreement with the parameters of 70 Ah and 720 A.
  2. Compact and mid-size crossovers. Modern SUV models are equipped with an air conditioning system, heating systems, multimedia complexes and driver assistants, each of which contributes to the overall energy consumption. A battery with the specified capacity ensures the correct operation of all these systems both during movement and in short-stop mode.
  3. Diesel passenger cars. Starting a diesel engine requires significant starter currents, especially in the cold season, when the oil viscosity increases and the energy for glow plugs is added to the starter load. The 720 A parameter ensures stable cold scrolling even at low temperatures.
  4. Cars with extended electrical load. Modern cars are equipped with dozens of electronic units, some of which work even with the ignition off. Heated seats, windows and mirrors, climate control, audio system, security system, telematics — all this requires a stable energy reserve from the battery. The capacity of 70 Ah is designed specifically for such operating conditions.

Compatibility by brand

The combination of L3 / 70 Ah / 720 Ah / R+ / B13 parameters is common in cars of the following brands: Volkswagen, Skoda, Audi, SEAT, Renault, Peugeot, Citroen, Opel, Ford (in European specifications), Hyundai, Kia, Chevrolet (for European and Korean platforms), Nissan (for the European market), Toyota (in European trim levels), Mazda, Honda (models with the European type of battery).

However, it is important to understand that the make and model alone are not a guarantee of compatibility. Within the same model, the battery used may vary depending on:

  • the year of manufacture and the generation of the car;
  • engine volume and type;
  • Configuration and supply market;
  • availability of a Start-Stop system and related electronics;
  • battery pad designs and mounting schemes.

The same body in different versions can be equipped with batteries of different sizes and technologies. For this reason, the applicability is confirmed by the technical parameters of a particular instance — by the service book, the sticker on the standard battery, or by the manufacturer’s catalog number.

Incompatibilities

The installation of the EDCON DC70720R is incorrect in the following situations:

  • a case of a different standard size is required (L1, L2, L4, L5 or non-standard);
  • the car is designed for the left polarity (L+), in which the positive terminal is located on the opposite side.;
  • a different type of lower mounting is provided, which does not correspond to B13;
  • an EFB or AGM technology battery is installed normally, due to the Start-Stop system;
  • the dimensions of the seat are limited in height, length or width.;
  • the manufacturer’s specification provides for a different capacity or inrush current that differs from the battery parameters.

In each of these cases, the installation will lead either to mechanical installation problems or to electrical and operational inconsistencies that will manifest themselves during the use of the vehicle.

Features of AGM battery replacement

Special attention should be paid to the situation when the car is normally equipped with an AGM battery. In this case, replacement is allowed only with an AGM analog, unless otherwise explicitly provided by the vehicle manufacturer.

The AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) technology involves the binding of electrolyte in microporous fiberglass separators located between the plates. This design eliminates the free liquid phase of the electrolyte, increases safety and significantly changes the operational characteristics of the battery. AGM batteries are distinguished by:

  • increased resistance to cyclic loads;
  • increased battery life with frequent discharge and charge cycles;
  • high charge reception rate, which is critical for short trips;
  • stable operation with a significant number of consumers and long-term parking with the systems turned on.

AGM is used on vehicles with a Start-Stop system, regenerative braking, intelligent charging and partial charge mode (PSoC – Partial State of Charge), in which the battery operates in an incompletely charged state most of the time.

Consequences of installing a conventional lead-acid battery instead of an AGM:

  • reduction of the actual battery life due to its inability to withstand cyclic loads — a conventional battery is not designed for hundreds of thousands of discharge-charge cycles as part of a Start-Stop operation;
  • incorrect operation or forced shutdown of the Start-Stop system due to the fact that the control unit recognizes a discrepancy;
  • non—compliance with the charging algorithm – the generator and controller output parameters calculated for AGM, which leads to overcharging or undercharging of a conventional battery;
  • accelerated plate wear during short trips with high electrical load;
  • errors in the energy management system recorded by electronic units;
  • reducing the reliability of cold start as the battery degrades.

Matching in size, capacity, and inrush current does not compensate for the difference in technology. The electronics are adapted to the AGM charge curve, and installing a conventional battery disrupts this balance.

For vehicles normally equipped with EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) batteries, switching to a conventional lead—acid battery is also not recommended. EFB is an intermediate solution between classic and AGM batteries, designed for vehicles with a basic Start-Stop system. Replacing the EFB with an AGM is possible after checking compatibility with the car’s control system; switching back to a regular battery leads to the same consequences as in the case of an AGM.

With a standard AGM installation, the only correct replacement is an AGM battery of the appropriate type—size, capacity, polarity and mounting type. Any deviations from this rule should be considered as a violation of the manufacturer’s requirements and the reason for the possible loss of battery life and malfunction of the vehicle’s electronic systems.

The dominant position of the EDCON DC70720R in the demand structure is determined by the coincidence of its design and electrical parameters with the intersection of the most widespread OEM specifications.
