What is overcharging a battery?

Overcharging a car battery is a process of excessive charging, in which the voltage and current supplied to the battery exceed the permissible parameters set for this type of battery. As a result of overcharging, there is an overabundance of electrical energy, which not only does not increase the battery capacity, but also harms it.

Overcharging is characterized by the following technical aspects:

  • increased charging voltage, for lead-acid car batteries, the standard charging voltage is in the range of 13.8–14.4 V with a 12-volt system. Overcharging begins when this value is exceeded, over 14.8 V;
  • high charging current, if the charging current exceeds the recommended values (on average 10-30% of the rated capacity of the battery), the internal resistance of the battery increases, gas begins to be released;
  • electrolyte and gas release, during the recharge process, water is electrolyzed into electrolytes, hydrogen and oxygen are released, which leads to a decrease in the liquid level and possible damage to the plates;
  • thermal effect, an increase in temperature inside the battery due to overcharging leads to the destruction of active masses and a decrease in battery life.

Overcharging results in accelerated battery wear, loss of capacity, potential mechanical damage to the case, and in extreme cases, swelling or destruction.

How to avoid overcharging?

The following technical measures are recommended to prevent overcharging of the battery:

  1. Using the generator voltage regulator. Modern cars are equipped with voltage regulators that stabilize the output voltage of the generator and prevent it from exceeding the set range. In case of malfunction or absence of the regulator, the probability of overcharging increases significantly.
  2. The use of appropriate chargers. Car battery chargers must have an automatic shutdown or switch to a maintenance (training) charging mode when a full charge is reached. Charging must be carried out with a voltage and current control that does not exceed the characteristics of the battery.
  3. Battery temperature control. It is important to prevent the battery from overheating during charging. Temperature sensors and cooling systems are used for this purpose, especially in industrial and sports applications.
  4. Regular maintenance. Checking the electrolyte level and refilling it with distilled water if necessary.
  5. Inspection of the contact terminals and wiring to prevent high resistances and voltage surges.
  6. Using batteries with a protection system. Modern AGM and gel batteries have enhanced internal protection systems against overcharging, which significantly reduces risks.
